Occupy Movement News Update of the Day: Feminist writer and activist Naomi Wolf was arrested last night while protesting with Occupy Wall Street members outside an event for New York gov. Andrew Cuomo hosted by The Huffington Post — an online publication Wolf regularly contributes to.
According to the Associated Press, Wolf was warned several times by police to keep off the street outside Skylight Studios. She ignored the repeated requests and was taken into custody.
Upon her release, Wolf took to Facebook to say that she was not disobeying orders, and “was arrested for standing lawfully on the sidewalk.” Wolf claims she was arrested for disagreeing with the NYPD’s interpretation of what the protesting permit does and does not allow demonstrators to do.
“I told the protesters that the NYC permit requirement that states that using a megaphone is illegal…is an unverifiable untransparent requirement,” she says, “because it is basically made up by the administration, permits can be denied with no recourse for any reason, and that we have the right to freedom of speech and assembly.”
Another high-profile supporter of the Occupy Wall Street movement who stopped by yesterday is Alec Baldwin, who decided late last night to drop in on protesters at Zuccotti Park. The actor says he spent “a too brief two hours” speaking with demonstrators and helping clean up.
While many were happy to see Baldwin, others sought to warn the movement about getting into bed with “a shill for Capitol One.” Baldwin retorted that all of his Capital One earnings were to art charities, and reminded the naysayers that the problem isn’t the banks, but rather the banking system.
Alec’s brother Billy also expressed his support for Occupy Wall Street.
The official website of Occupy Wall Street has just released the results of a large survey it conducted to determine the demographics of the movement’s members and supporters. Among the more surprising statistics: One in three survery respondents is older than 35. Related: Wall Street Journal of all places helps you figure out your percentile.
